Improving Tech Interviews: Lessons from a Google Interviewer
Do you hate tech interviews? At pibi.studio we do them differently.
In previous article, I shared how to crack coding interviews, but as a former top interviewer at Google, I’ve seen how hard tech interviews can be. Many people don’t like them, especially at big companies. I wanted to make interviews better, so I created a new way to do them during my time at Google.
Here’s how I changed things:
Making Interviews More Personal
-
Start by getting to know the person
- Ask candidates about themselves
- Find a topic they know well or really like
-
Help them feel comfortable
- Ask questions about what they know
- This helps candidates relax and feel more sure of themselves
-
Move to job-related questions
- Slowly ask harder questions about the job
A New Way to Look at Coding Problems
-
Begin with an easy task
- Give a simple, real-world coding problem
- No hard topics, no binary trees 🌲
- Help candidates feel good by solving an easy problem
-
Change the problem and see how they adapt
- Add to or change the first problem
- Ask candidates to update their answer
🔑 This is the most important part. It helps me see:
- How they think
- How they solve problems
- How well they can improve their code
More Than Just Coding
- Let candidates ask questions
- Give them enough time to ask about the job and company
- Talk about what it’s like to work there
- Remember, candidates need to decide if the job is right for them too
Did It Work?
This way of doing interviews helped me learn a lot about each candidate. Many of the people I said were good for the job ended up getting hired.
Are you tired of the usual tech interview process? At pibi.studio, we know it’s important to make tech interviews better and more human. We help companies do interviews that check coding skills but also let people show their real abilities in a comfortable way.
